Every contractor writes proposals differently. These are the details homeowners most often want to see spelled out before signing — a missing item is not automatically a problem, but it is usually worth a question.

A higher price is not evidence of overcharging, and a lower price is not automatically a better deal. Two estimates can differ because they describe genuinely different work.
Commonly missing or unclear
The gaps homeowners notice after work has started.
- Generator listed by kilowatt only, with no make and model.
- Transfer switch amperage and type unstated.
- No list of which circuits or loads are actually backed up.
- Load management mentioned without saying which appliances shed.
- Gas line length or size unspecified, or capped at a footage without saying what happens beyond it.
- Nothing about whether the utility must upsize the meter or regulator.
- Pad or base type not named.
- Trenching restoration unaddressed.
- Permits and inspections neither included nor excluded clearly.
- Startup and warranty registration not confirmed.
Allowances, exclusions and extras
Where the final invoice can drift from the estimate.
Gas line footage
Many quotes include a set run length and bill per foot beyond it. Confirm the included distance and the overage rate.
Meter or regulator upsizing
If the existing gas service cannot supply the unit, utility work may be required and is usually outside the contractor's price.
Panel condition
An older or full panel may need replacement or a subpanel before a transfer switch can be installed.
Permit allowance
Estimated fees reconciled to actual jurisdiction charges, sometimes with separate electrical and gas permits.
Site work
Rock, roots, retaining walls, setbacks and drainage corrections at the pad location can add cost.
Landscaping and hardscape restoration
Trench routes across lawn, patio or driveway are frequently excluded from restoration.

Quote red flags
Wording that deserves a second look.
- 'Install generator' as the whole scope description.
- No transfer switch detail at all.
- No list of backed-up circuits on a load-managed design.
- Gas work assumed but never mentioned.
- No permits referenced on work that typically requires them.
- Large deposit demanded before equipment is ordered.
- Startup omitted where the manufacturer warranty depends on it.
- Verbal promises about running the air conditioning that never appear in writing.
None of these mean a contractor is doing anything wrong. They are simply points where the written document leaves room for interpretation.
Comparing competing estimates
Are the two bids even for the same job?
- Match generator model and kilowatt rating before comparing totals.
- Compare transfer switch type and amperage.
- Confirm both proposals back up the same loads — this is the most common hidden difference.
- Check included gas run length on each and the overage rate.
- See whether panel upgrades are included in either.
- Compare pad type and site work.
- Confirm permits, inspections and startup are in both.
- Compare labor warranty length alongside the manufacturer warranty.
What affects pricing
Labor rates, material costs, project complexity, geography, permitting, site access, specifications and current market conditions all move the number. There is no single universally correct price for a job, and Learn The Quote does not claim to determine one.

- What is the difference between an automatic and a manual transfer switch?
- An automatic transfer switch senses an outage and starts the generator without you present. A manual switch requires you to operate it. Automatic switches cost more and are what most whole-home standby proposals include — but the document should say which.
- What does 'whole house' actually mean in these quotes?
- It varies. Some proposals back up every circuit; others use load management to shed large loads such as air conditioning, ranges or dryers so a smaller generator can cover the rest. Both are legitimate designs and they price differently, so ask which circuits are covered.
- Why does generator sizing change the price so much?
- Kilowatt rating drives the equipment cost directly, and larger units often need larger fuel supply lines, bigger pads and heavier electrical connections. Sizing depends on the loads you want covered and how they are managed.
- Is the gas line work included?
- Sometimes it is a separate trade or a separate line item. Distance from the meter, pipe size, whether the utility must upsize the meter or regulator, and whether a propane tank is being rented or purchased all matter and are often unstated.
- Are permits required?
- Generator installations commonly require electrical and gas permits with inspections, and some jurisdictions also have noise or setback rules. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, so confirm locally and ask who pulls the permits.
- What is commissioning or startup?
- A factory-specified startup where the installer or an authorized technician verifies the installation, sets parameters and runs the unit. Some manufacturer warranties depend on documented startup, so check that it is included.
- What maintenance will I need?
- Standby generators typically require periodic oil, filter and battery service, plus exercise cycles. Ask what the maintenance interval is, what it costs, and whether a service plan is included or optional.
